Mumbai: A major controversy has emerged in Worli concerning the functioning of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), raising serious concerns among residents of Worli Adarsh Nagar, Sagar Darshan Housing Society. A redevelopment project affecting nearly 2,500 families, which had remained stalled for over three decades, now faces fresh uncertainty following administrative action by the SRA.
The project, undertaken by Chintaharni Chintpurni Realtors LLP, had recently gained momentum after the SRA granted formal construction approval in October 2024. Construction commenced at an accelerated pace, offering renewed hope to residents—many of whom have waited decades for permanent rehabilitation.
However, during ongoing construction, the Chief Executive Officer of the SRA reportedly issued a notice under Section 13(2), proposing removal of the developer. The decision has sparked widespread concern, particularly as residents allege that no substantial justification was provided for such action. The move has raised fears that the project could once again be stalled, potentially displacing thousands of families.
Adding to the seriousness of the matter are allegations that, earlier in February 2025, a demand of ₹10 crore was made in connection with the project. It is further alleged that certain individuals, including a former corporator, misused provisions of the RTI Act to exert pressure on the developer.
Residents have also pointed out that similar notices were issued in a neighbouring SRA project involving over 2,000 families, even while judicial proceedings were underway. This has led to questions regarding procedural propriety and respect for ongoing court processes.
Senior citizens and long-time residents have expressed deep anxiety, stating that further delays would escalate costs and prolong their already long wait for secure housing. The affected residents have appealed to higher authorities and the media, urging intervention to ensure transparency, fairness, and timely completion of the project.
In light of the gravity of the situation and the number of families involved, the residents have appealed to Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, seeking his immediate intervention. They have urged the Chief Minister to examine the circumstances under which the administrative action was taken and to ensure that the redevelopment process is not obstructed without due cause. The residents have expressed confidence that timely directions from the State’s highest executive authority will help protect the housing rights of eligible beneficiaries and restore faith in the system.
