It is a defining challenge of development, governance, security, and human well-being. India’s approach is science-anchored and equity-aware, where we align clean energy with livelihood security, embed resilience in rural and urban schemes, and ensure those responsible for emissions are the ones who must change. While the developed world industrialized through high emissions and cleaned up later, India is attempting something far more complex to grow, eradicate poverty, urbanize, industrialize, and decarbonize simultaneously. We refuse to solve yesterday’s poverty by creating tomorrow's ecological crisis. Our journey with per capita emissions at just ~2 tonnes per year (far below global averages) proves that clean energy is not charity. It is competitiveness driven by economics. We have achieved our 2030 target of 50% non-fossil installed power capacity in June 2025, five years ahead of schedule, with the share now exceeding 51%. We believe the future is not inherited by accident but is secured by intention. Together, with humility, science, and justice, we will secure it.”</div><div><br></div><div>Dia Mirza, Goodwill Ambassador, United Nations Environment Programme, said, “Climate change is not gender neutral. Women and girls experience its impacts most acutely, even as they grow much of the world’s food and sustain families and communities. Yet they remain underrepresented in climate and energy decision-making. Sustainability today is no longer a choice but the foundation of survival, dignity, and peace. Engaging with nature is not a luxury but a necessity for every individual.”</div><div><br></div><div>Ms Isabelle Tschan, Deputy Resident Representative, United Nations Development Programme, shared, “With nearly 65% of India’s population under the age of 35, youth participation and leadership are central to shaping how sustainability is practised across communities and institutions. In this spirit, UNDP is partnering with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and TERI to launch the Mission LiFE Youth Ambassadors programme”.</div><div><br></div><div>Vaishali Nigam Sinha, Co-Founder & Chairperson, Sustainability, ReNew, observed, “Development and climate are no longer parallel agendas; they are the same agenda. Clean energy is not a nice-to-do; it is an economic imperative. The global South is no longer asking for permission; it is offering solutions. What we commit to matters, but what we do collectively, and between summits, matters even more. This Summit is not a moment; it is a mandate to act.”</div><div><br></div><div>Dr Ash Pachauri, Co-Founder and Senior Mentor, POP (Protect Our Planet) Movement, “As we come together to mark 25 years of WSDS at the very place where it began, we celebrate not only a remarkable legacy, but a shared responsibility for what lies ahead. This journey has been shaped by vision, wisdom, values, and powerful voices that have built awareness and endurance over the years. Yet, this moment asks a deeper question: what will we do with all that we have learned? Today is not just a celebration of the past; it is the first day of the rest of our lives.”</div><div><br></div><div>Prachi Shevgaonkar, Founder, Cool The Globe, shared, “My journey with the World Sustainable Development Summit began when I was a young student who felt overwhelmed by the scale of climate change and unsure of what one ordinary person could do. I chose to begin with small, practical actions and to make sustainability part of daily life. What started as a personal effort in my dorm room grew into a shared mission, supported by citizens across 150 countries.”</div><div><br></div><div>Nitin Desai, Chairman, TERI, said, “At WSDS, we reaffirm that sustainable development cannot be driven by uniform goals alone. Governments cannot act in isolation; progress requires shared learning among institutions, researchers, businesses, and communities working on the ground. This platform enables the exchange of experiences, builds understanding, and strengthens cooperation.”</div><div><br></div><div>Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, said, “WSDS is about building pathways of opportunity, not merely responding to crisis. Before Mona can ask for more details about the honeymoon, the call is disconnected due to network failure. Mona faces a problem: what exactly is this "honeymoon ritual," and how is it celebrated? Not even his friends know; no one in the village knows about it. When word reaches Mona's mother, the situation has changed even more. Upon asking the priest, it is revealed that he too has no idea about the ritual. What should be done now? The news reaches the bride's family. They realize that if the groom's honeymoon ceremony is not performed, the bride's mother could die after the wedding, so they refuse to go ahead with the wedding. A Panchayat is convened, but even in the Panchayat, no one is aware of the ritual. Everyone begins discussing it in their own way. The honeymoon ritual becomes an issue for the entire state. Taking advantage of this, the Parampra Party nominates Mona's father as an MLA candidate, and the Secular Party nominates Varsha's father as its candidate. Mona is upset because the topic of the wedding is completely lost in the chaos. The film unfolds through many interesting and funny moments, showcasing various aspects of our society through comedy. Dr Dammika Patabendi, Minister of Environment, Sri Lanka, said, “We are making strong progress; nearly 100% of our population has access to electricity, and renewable energy accounts for approximately 50% of our total electricity generation, with a target of 70% by 2030. However, transformation requires more than policy. It demands collective will, courage to act, humility to listen, and commitment to cooperate.”</div><div><br></div><div>H.E. Madhav Prasad Chaulagain, Minister, Ministry of Forests and Environment, Nepal, stated, “Multilateralism is not merely a diplomatic concept for Nepal; it is a means to share responsibilities and collectively address regional and global issues. Mattias Frumerie, Climate Ambassador & Head of Delegation to UNFCCC, Swedish Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, said, “For Sweden, multilateralism is in our DNA. At the same time, climate change and more frequent disasters are disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities, deepening poverty and inequality. For every dollar invested in nature, far greater sums continue to flow into activities that degrade it. We therefore need to reform financial systems so that public spending aligns with climate and nature goals, harmful subsidies are repurposed, and private capital is mobilised at scale”.</div><div><br></div><div>Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, stated, “Nature-based solutions must be treated as long-term public assets and not as commodities to be monetised at the cost of ecological integrity or community ownership. A perfusionist is the trained healthcare professional who operates the heart-lung machine during open-heart surgery. When a surgeon temporarily stops the heart to perform a procedure, it is the perfusionist who ensures that oxygen-rich blood continues to circulate throughout the patient’s body. Their role is crucial not only in heart surgeries but also in life-support systems such as ECMO, which supports patients with severe heart or lung failure.</div><div><br></div><div>Despite being central to life-saving procedures, perfusionists often work behind the scenes, receiving limited public recognition. ISECTCON 2026 seeks to bridge this awareness gap, while also addressing the need for stronger professional recognition, structured training pathways and wider understanding of perfusion science within India’s healthcare ecosystem.</div><div><br></div><div>The scientific sessions on Day 1 focused on advancements in perfusion practice, pediatric cardiac care and the growing integration of Artificial Intelligence and robotics in surgical support systems. A special debate titled “Evidence vs Experience” encouraged open dialogue on balancing data-driven decisions with clinical expertise. The inauguration ceremony also honored senior professionals with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their contribution to the field.</div><div><br></div><div>Day 2 will focus on advanced strategies in complex cardiac procedures and the evolving role of ECMO as a bridge to recovery and transplant. A scientific quiz and the society’s General Body Meeting are also part of the program.</div><div><br></div><div>Speaking at the inauguration, Ravindra Sawardekar, Organising Secretary, ISECTCON said,“Many people know the heart surgeon who performs the operation, but very few know the perfusionist who keeps the patient alive during that surgery. Artificial Intelligence is not here to replace clinical judgment. It is here to support it. By integrating AI into perfusion systems, we can improve accuracy, enhance patient safety and make faster, better-informed decisions in critical moments. Our responsibility is to adapt, learn and ensure that perfusion-science strengthens patient care.”He further added,“In India, there is a lack of awareness about the important field of perfusion, along with a shortage of trained professionals. With the number of heart surgeries and life-support treatments increasing every year, the demand for perfusionists is rising rapidly.
