Expanding Academic and Career Pathways for Graduates

Mumbai: MET Institute of PGDM, Mumbai, has long been recognised for its industry-oriented pedagogy, dual specialisations, and new-age electives such as MarTech, FinTech, Business Analytics, Media & Entertainment, and Start-ups & New Enterprise Management. That reputation now comes with a significant addition: the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has granted MBA equivalence to the institute's two-year full-time PGDM programme, giving its graduates the same academic standing as MBA degree holders from Indian universities.

In practical terms, this gives MET graduates formal eligibility for doctoral programmes in India and overseas, for roles in government organisations, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and regulatory bodies, and for opportunities where an MBA or equivalent degree is specified as a requirement.

The development reflects the evolving landscape of management education, where autonomous PGDM institutions have increasingly focused on industry-oriented curricula while students continue to seek qualifications that offer both practical relevance and academic mobility. AIU equivalence bridges that gap by recognising qualifying PGDM programmes as academically equivalent to university-awarded MBA degrees.

For current students and alumni alike, the recognition removes long-standing ambiguity surrounding the acceptance of PGDM qualifications across higher education and public sector recruitment. It also enhances the international portability of the qualification for graduates seeking advanced education abroad, where universities often evaluate academic equivalence during admissions.

Commenting on the recognition, Pankaj Bhujbal, Trustee, MET, said, “Students today expect their management education to prepare them for every career pathway, whether that’s corporate leadership, entrepreneurship, research, public policy or higher education. AIU equivalence ensures our graduates have the academic recognition to pursue those ambitions without limitations. Combined with our strong alumni network across industries, this recognition reinforces the value of a PGDM that brings together industry relevance, an active community of MET professionals, and credentials recognised across academia and public institutions."

The MET Institute’s two-year full-time PGDM programme is approved by AICTE, recognised by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), and granted equivalence to MBA by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The programme is supported by academic partnerships with KPMG, enabling students to gain industry-relevant knowledge and practical exposure. Its curriculum combines classroom learning with internships, live industry projects, corporate interactions, and experiential learning to prepare graduates for evolving business environments. This industry-focused approach has consistently delivered strong placement outcomes, with the highest package standing at INR 20 LPA, while also equipping graduates to pursue entrepreneurial ventures.

As management education becomes increasingly interdisciplinary and career paths diversify beyond traditional corporate roles, academic recognition is emerging as an important consideration for students evaluating business schools. The AIU equivalence granted to MET’s PGDM programme strengthens its value not only as an industry-focused qualification but also as one that offers graduates the same academic flexibility and progression opportunities as an MBA.
