Mumbai : The National Design Centre (NDC) under the support of Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is hosting the “Mumbai Saree Festival,” a major marketing expo dedicated to traditional Indian handloom sarees. The event is set to take place at Nehru Centre, Worli, Mumbai, from August 30th to September 5th, 2024. This festival will feature 70 handloom weavers, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and Co-Operative societies from across the country, showcasing the rich diversity of India’s textile heritage. Virasat Mumbai Saree Festival was inaugurated by Dr. M. Beena (IAS Development Commissioner Handloom, Ministry of Textiles) at the Worli Nehru Centre. Dr. Sharmila Dua (Director National Institute of Fashion Technology Mumbai) was also present on the occasion.
The primary objective of the “Mumbai Saree Festival” is to enhance the market presence of traditional Indian handloom sarees by providing a platform that connects weavers directly with national and international buyers. This expo will offer a valuable opportunity for weavers, SHGs, and Co-Operative societies to display their products, forge market linkages, and engage in direct transactions with exporters, wholesalers, and customers. The festival aims to support the Handloom weavers by expanding their market reach and ensuring the sustainability of their beautiful creations.
Attendees will have the chance to explore a wide range of sarees, each representing the unique weaves and craftsmanship from different regions of India.
The exhibition will include sarees such as Kancheepuram, Chanderi, Maheshwari, Banarasi, Paithani, Bhagalpuri, Gopalpur Tussar, Shantipuri, Karvath Kati, Habaspuri, Pochampally Ikat, Jamdani, Dhaniakhali, Mysore Silk, Muga Silk, Venkatagiri, and Kotpad featuring over 50 distinct weaves. The event is expected to attract a diverse audience, including fashion enthusiasts, designers, and industry professionals.
The “Mumbai Saree Festival” is also designed as a key sourcing destination for exporters, wholesalers, retailers, e-Commerce platforms and designers, providing them with the opportunity to acquire authentic handloom sarees directly from the artisans. This event is anticipated to draw a large number of visitors each day, highlighting the significance of traditional handloom textiles in both domestic and international markets.
